Atlanta Ballet opens its new season at the Cobb Energy Center with Inspired by Balanchine, celebrating the neoclassical style, popularized by George Balanchine, and its influence on today’s choreographers.
The evening consists of three extraordinary works including:
Serenade
One of Balanchine’s most beloved works, Serenade is the first original work he created after arriving in America, for the new ballet company that would later become the New York City Ballet. This iconic ballet marked a milestone in dance history when it was created in 1935 and remains a hallmark of New York City Ballet.
Sum Stravinsky
First presented by Atlanta Ballet in the 2018|2019 season, Kiyon Ross’ Sum Stravinsky “constantly seethes with engaging movement” (The Boston Globe). This effervescent work uses layered groups of dancers in vibrant colors to bring Stravinsky’s famous “Dumbarton Oaks” Concerto to life in a joyous and festive three-dimensional life.
In the folds
Created by Tony Award-winning choreographer Justin Peck and featuring a live rendition of Philip Glass’s piano score, this abstract ballet will captivate you with its unusual, shifting geometric shapes and intricate structures crafted from dancers’ bodies. Created in 2012, In Creases made Justin Peck a worthy heir to the neoclassical throne of his mentors at New York City Ballet, George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. Following in the footsteps of mentor Jerome Robbins, Peck choreographed the award-winning 2022 revival of West Side Storydirected by Steven Spielberg.
