TUla Ballet Artistic Director Marcello Angelini announced the 2021-2022 season at a virtual event on Friday April 23 live from Studio K in Brookside, a season he hopes will bring the company back to a sense of normalcy.
“The past 14 months have been difficult for all of us in the community and globally, both personally and professionally,” said Angelini. “Our country is now passing around the corner in the quest to defeat this pandemic, hope is palpable and the prospect of returning to a regular ballet season tangible and seemingly within reach. It is with this hope that we announce our 65th season, rich in world premieres, a brand new Nutcracker, a time of reflection with a world premiere piece dedicated to the 1921 Tulsa race massacre, the incarnation of the classical tradition illustrated by Swan Lake. , American premieres like Vendetta and the return of Andy Blankenbuehler’s Remember our Song.
After a non-traditional season and what seemed to be such an uncertain future for the arts, Angelini not only once again found the perfect balance between 19th century classics and contemporary works reflecting our time, but created a range to cut the blast intended to be the re-energizing kickoff for the community of Tulsa after the pandemic. The season will kick off with Creations in Studio K from September 9 to 19, 2021 with three world premieres by renowned choreographers Yury Yanowsky, Katarzkyna Kozielska and Stephanie Martinez. Jennifer Archibald’s multimedia experience of the Tulsa Running Massacre will create an unforgettable theatrical experience October 28-31, 2021 and mark the company’s return to the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. A brand new production of The Nutcracker will make its magical world premiere from December 10 to 23, 2021. The 2022 kickoff will be the highly anticipated US premiere of Vendetta, a Mafia story. The iconic and most performed ballet of all time, Swan Lake, will grace the stage from March 24-27, 2022. This spectacular season will end on a high note with Signature Series, featuring pieces by Tony winner Itzik Galili -Award Andy Blankenbuehler and a World Premiere by Andrew McNicol.
