The New York-based American Ballet Theater Studio Company will perform at the Madison Center for the Arts on Sunday, November 14 for an evening of dancing in town.
With a combination of neoclassical canons, contemporary and newly created works, the show will feature the American Ballet Theater Studio Company, ABT’s young professional company. Founded in 1939, ABT was one of the world’s first dance companies. It was designated by Congress as the National Ballet Company of the United States in 2006.
The American Ballet Theater Company attracts over 300,000 spectators per year. ABT Dancers have completed over 30 international tours and visited over 45 countries.
The ABT Studio Company is made up of 12 dancers aged 17 to 21. Six more “apprentices” – members who will be promoted to ABT’s main company in December – will join the stage for the show, dancer Aleisha Walker said.
Almost 80% of American Ballet Theater’s current dancers are ABT Studio Company alumni.
The November 14 performance would be the company’s premiere in Phoenix. Here is what you need to know about the visit.
ABT dancers can’t wait to perform again
This is Studio Company’s first full tour since the start of the pandemic.
“Our goal is to do so many different styles that are still linked to each other while keeping the fact that we are just coming out of the pandemic,” Walker said. “There will be several group dances and partnerships to celebrate the fact that we can all be on stage again.”
Highlights of the show include “La Follia Variations”, a dance choreographed by Lauren Lovette of the New York City Ballet. It is within the framework of the ABT Women’s Movement to commission a new work from an emerging choreographer.
The show will also feature the musical works of classical composers Sergei Rachmaninoff and Domenico Scarlatti.
