Sun Valley Ballet announces today that it will present the debut of the internationally acclaimed Boston Ballet under Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen on June 24 and 25 at 7 p.m. at Sun Valley Pavilion.
The Boston Ballet, long recognized as one of America’s premier dance organizations, renowned for its excellence and artistic innovation under the artistic direction of Mikko Nissinen, will perform in Sun Valley for the first time this summer. Nissinen’s professional dancing career began in his native Finland with training at the National Ballet School of Finland. During her performing career, Nissinen danced professionally with the Dutch National Ballet, Basel Ballet and as a principal dancer at San Francisco Ballet.
“I am thrilled to have Boston Ballet invited to Sun Valley Ballet 2022 and eager to present two specially curated programs, demonstrating the range and versatility of our repertoire and our company,” said Nissinen.
As Artistic Director of Boston Ballet, Nissinen defined the company’s image, cultivating a vibrant collection of classical, neo-classical and contemporary repertoire, ranging from complete classical ballets to masterpieces by George Balanchine. by new works and world premieres from some of today’s finest contemporary choreographers. In 2016, Nissinen and the Boston Ballet established a long-term partnership with William Forsythe, allowing the Company to cultivate a rich collection of his work.
Ballet Sun Valley’s Festival 2022 will offer two distinct programs. Each night features different works spanning a range of styles from contemporary to classic. Performance highlights include three world premieres of Boston Ballet’s Spring 2022 season. These new works include two from ChoreograpHER, a women-led program celebrating innovative women in creative fields such as: choreography, music, design and visual arts. Choreographic pieces to be performed at Sun Valley Ballet are Point of Departure by New York City Ballet principal dancer and choreographer Tiler Peck and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw and Chaptered in Fragments by Boston Ballet principal dancer and choreographer Lia Cirio. In addition, there will be performances of DEVIL’S/eye, to The Rolling Stones by choreographer Stephen Galloway, whose world premiere took place at the Boston Ballet in March 2022, as well as the work Blake Works I by William Forsythe (commissioned by the Ballet of the Paris Opera, 2016).
