Joyce Theater will honor Pride 2022 with a queer reimagining of classical ballet

The Joyce Theater Foundation has announced that it will honor the conclusion of Pride 2022 with the Joyce Theater debut of acclaimed movement artist Christopher Williams. Williams’ series of queer interpretations of renowned classical ballets will be performed at the Joyce Theater from June 28 to July 3, marking the acclaimed dance artist’s New York debut.

Known for his sprawling visual imagination and endless ability for cross-disciplinary collaboration, Williams is now bringing his own bizarre versions of the Ballets Russes’ beloved works to the New York stage for the first time. New York City Ballet principal dancer Taylor Stanley will lead a troupe of acclaimed contemporary dancers, both as “queen of the sylphs” in Williams’ reimagining of The Sylphids and in the title role of his new version of Nijinsky Afternoon for a faun.

The evening will also continue Williams’ longtime collaboration with costume designer Andrew Jordan and lighting designer Joe Levasseur. Infused with a queer perspective and Williams’ distinct personal style from contemporary dance, these legendary pieces are reimagined for a modern world that can embrace tradition and radical change in one fell swoop.

Joyce’s summer season also includes a list of several world premieres.
