The Joyce Theater welcomes the world-renowned Complexions Contemporary Ballet to its stage until March 3rd 2019 as the company celebrates its 25th anniversary as a leading multicultural company. Choreographer Dwight Rhoden combines traditional ballet movements with innovative methods, styles and cultures that create an immersive experience for audiences.complexions just uses minimal lighting and costumes for her performances, so the dancers’ bodies and choreography really carry the show. Balancing modern dance and traditional ballet music and movement, the variety of pieces ensures that audiences stay on the edge of their seat. The dances that include the whole company are exhilarating and the various moving parts are mesmerizing. Performances with a single dance or a couple are intimate and sensual.
During the second week of its visit, Complexions will present the world premiere of wake up, a physical reaction to the daily news. With music ranging from Phillip Glass, Logic and Kendrick Lamar to remixed electronica and African percussion, this daring and socially responsible one-act ballet, wake up presents the whole company and examines the current political climate through music and movement. Additionally, to honor their 25and anniversary, the company will present From yesterday to today, filled with audience favorites from the company’s vibrant 25-year history. Highlights include snippets of classics such as ‘Rise’ with music by U2 (2008) and ‘On Holiday’ (2010), which features Billy Porter singing ‘My Man’. All matinee shows will feature the world premiere of Bach 25 and From yesterday to today.
