Neoclassical ballet

Celebrate the art of ballet

AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) — World Ballet Day has been recognized every October 1 since 2014.

Marie Kubeck, a ballet mistress with Dance U in Augusta, says ballet originated in the 15th century and evolved over the years.

“At that time it was danced only by noble men and women of the nobility, not by the general population,” Kubeck said.

The art form has since evolved from pointe dancing to neoclassical and classical styles. Kubeck says behind those beautiful smiles is hard work and dedication.

“When I did little ones, I always said the hardest thing you’re going to learn to do in ballet is to stand still, and that’s the hardest thing to do. They learn to focus, they they learn to stand still, they learn respect, they learn commitment and hard work,” Kubeck said.

Lilian Baliey and her sister Khloe have been dancing for as long as they can remember. Lilian says dancing got her through a lot, including a tough time at school.

“Last year school was pretty hard for me because I started algebra and things like that, so it stresses me out a bit, but coming to dance I forgot everything. was just me and the moves,” Lilian said.

For Khloe, she loves the challenges that come with dancing and, like her sister, looks to the future for more.

“I also want to go to college for dance, and I want to teach classes here,” Khloe said.

Studio owner Laura Lewis says it’s more than just moves. She says dancers who go from a year old to seniors can still rely on what they learn for the rest of their lives.

“Ballet is above all a discipline of dance. Ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, all require dedication. But, ballet really specifically has a much deeper discipline, and it really transfers the daily life of children to the daily life of adults,” Lewis said.

She wants people to know that the art form is accessible to everyone, regardless of circumstance.

I would absolutely recommend ballet as a form of extracurricular activity for all ages, not just for students, but for adults,” Lewis said.

People with extra special abilities, dance lessons for everyone, and it’s so important that people know it’s available.
