Cape Town City Ballet will jump into the spring with a dynamic new program that will put a little spring into your approach. THREE DANCES pays homage to three of the world’s most famous male choreographers and includes the South African premiere of Robert NorthInternationally renowned TROY GAME, as well as Georges balanchinethe exquisite CONCERTO BAROCCO by and the striking FALLING ANGELS by Jiří Kylián. This presentation marks the first time that a work by Kylián has been staged for a South African company.
The season will be presented at the Artscape Opera from November 6 to 13.

Balanchine’s neo-classical Barocco Concerto is danced to JS Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins, the instruments personified by the two main ladies of the cast and an ensemble of eight dancers. Falling Angels by Kylián is an all-female work created to a hypnotic score by Steve Reich and inspired by the percussive musical rituals of West Africa. The energetic and tumultuous choreography becomes captivating as the dancers dive into the whirlwind of the score. It will be staged by Elke Schepers who presents a variety of works by Jiří Kylián around the world. Costume design is by Joke Visser with lighting design by Joop Caboort.
Falling Angels was first presented in 1989 by the Nederlands Dans Theater. Kylián comments on the piece: “Choreographically, this piece is a study of the two most opposed properties of any work of art: discipline and freedom. It is the symbol of a conflict between belonging and independence, a dilemma, which accompanies us all from the cradle to the grave. “
Troy Game is Robert NorthThe witty and engaging male work of Jon Kelietio and Bob Downes is composed of a score with a Brazilian flavor. Costume design for Troy Game is by Peter Farmer. Lighting Design is after Charter’s original design.
Robert North is director of the Krefeld / Mönchengladbach Ballet company. His illustrious career has seen him as artistic director of the Ballet Rambert; co-artistic director of the London Contemporary Dance Theater; Positions of artistic director at the Italian Teatro Regio in Turin, the Gothenburg Ballet, the Corpo di Ballo Dell’Arena di Verona in Italy and the Scottish Ballet.
In addition to TROY GAME, Robert has created over 90 ballets and choreographed for over 95 different companies around the world including: The Royal Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Scottish Ballet, English National Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, New Zealand Ballet, Rome Opera, Baletto di Toscana and Royal Danish Ballet. His many awards include the Positano Prize for Best Choreographer in Italy, and a Prize in Regio Emelia, Italy for the Most Outstanding Choreographer in a Children’s Ballet with The Snowman. North also received the Vignale Prize for his contribution to dance in Italy.
Jiří Kylián made his debut as a choreographer with the Stuttgart Ballet and went on to create three ballets for the Nederlands Dans Theater, before becoming artistic director of the company in 1975 and bringing the Company to the international stage with Sinfonietta. With Carel Birnie, he establishes a bridge program between school and professional life in the company of Nederlands Dans Theater II, but also Nederlands Dans Theater III, a company for older dancers, over forty years old. This extraordinary three-dimensional structure was unique in the world of dance.
Among the more than 100 works created by Jiří Kylián, he has collaborated with companies such as the Stuttgart Ballet, the Paris Opera Ballet, the Bayerisches Staatsoper Münich, Swedish television and the Tokyo Ballet. He has worked on various films and was a dance mentor for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative.
Kylián’s long list of international awards include: “Officer of the Order of Orange” – Netherlands; “Honorary Doctorate” – Julliard School New York; three “Nijinsky Prizes” – Monte Carlo; “Benoit de la Dance” – Moscow and Berlin; “Medal of Honor” of the President of the Czech Republic; “Commander of the Legion of Honor” of France, and in 2008 he was distinguished with one of the highest royal distinctions, the Medal of the Order of Arts and Sciences of the House of Orange which was awarded to him Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. Kylián received the Lifetime Achievement Award in the field of dance and theater by the Czech Ministry of Culture in Prague.
Founded as the Nico Malan Theater in 1971, the Artscape building is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
ALCHEMY – THREE DANCES – will be presented from November 6 to 13. The performances take place on November 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 at 7:30 p.m., with a morning on Saturday November 13 at 3:00 p.m.
