Aurea Ensemble and Festival Ballet Providence are proud to announce an exciting collaborative program, “Daybreak”, inspired by Langston Hughes’ iconic poem, “Daybreak in Alabama”.
The program will include Aurea’s signature blend of poetry, harmonica improvisation and chamber music, as well as extraordinary contemporary ballet from Festival Ballet Providence. This exciting free event will take place Sunday, September 19 at noon outdoors at the Pawtucket Arts Festival, Slater Park Main Stage, 401 Newport Ave., Pawtucket.
This first performance celebrates a new dawn of hope and reconciliation, the return of live performance and the great diverse and rich spirit of our nation. The program will feature special guest Rose Weaver (roseweaver.com), former actress, singer and renowned Trinity Repertory Company activist, and brand new choreography by Yury Yanowsky, artistic curator of Festival Ballet Providence, performed by Festival Ballet dancers.
“Daybreak” includes music by George Gershwin; Jessie Montgomery (newly named Chicago Symphony Composer-in-Residence); Florence Price (1887-1953), first African-American woman to have a symphonic premiere by a major American orchestra; and Chris Turner’s harmonica improvisations; readings by Langston Hughes, Rita Dove, DH Lawrence, Adrienne Rich and Miguel de Unamuno.
Acclaimed for its innovative and eclectic thematic programming, Aurea blends classical chamber music, brilliant harmonica improvisations and poignant readings. Festival Ballet Providence, Rhode Island’s premier ballet company and New England’s second largest ballet company, marks the opening of its 44th season of a diverse repertoire of classical, neo-classical and contemporary dance.
